What's the story with buying a used car with no tax on it, are you only liable for tax from the date of purchase and can only tax it once the ownership has been transferred into your name (log book sent on by seller)?

If the seller gives you the log book you can go to your local tax office with it and you insurance and change the ownership and tax it all at once

Correct, apart from it's not from the date of purchase; it's from the first day of the month you buy it.

    Seller shouldn't do that though.

Once the car is in your name you should be able to request a new PIN for taxing the car via motortax.ie.

Its pretty much instant as long as youve the proper details.

It's just an option if the op wanted to get the car taxed straight away and I am sure the seller wouldnt mind the car been changed out of the name quicker either but then again that's between the op and the seller

didn't know you could do this - thought the seller had to post the log book off???

Think the pin is the last few digits of your VIN number

THey should in a private sale, without exception.

They should send it off but they can hand it over if they wanted to or trust the buyer

In my personal experience that is not the case.

Also if we actually sorted out our system of taxing a car this wouldn't be an issue. Technically tou can be "done" for having no tax just after buying the car, but if brought to court I'm sure it would be thrown out.

With exception, when selling a car to non-resident for export.
