I just got some Stellar pans and they are great, a huge improvement on the tin can esque ones I had before.

A potato ricer is great for mash as well.

I need to build up my kitchen so what do you recommend? Specific links or descriptions would be great as well rather than "a corkscrew"!!

My stick blender/minichopper combo. Use it for everything from blending soups to making pesto and chopping onions.

    Also my espresso pot.

A proper, basic tin opener - the sort you jiggle backwards and forwards as you go around the tin. All other tin openers will fail, sooner or later - and usually when opening a tin is a really important thing to do!

    A good butcher's block.
    Wok.
Steamer -- personally I find bamboo ones are best but if you want to go down the fancy route than get one of the stainless steel ones.

You won't cook or prepare or serve with this but every home should have one

    http://www4.westfalia.net/shops/electronics/lights_and_bulbs/lights/battery_powered_lights/1202614-telescopic_magnetic_wand_with_light.htm

for retrieving dropped metal items in behind fridge/cooker/washing machine etc.

Second the global knife although I'd probably go for a 20cm global chef's knife.

Also kitchen tongs are essential. Ever had trouble turning steak or any type of meat in a pan? Sausages are particulalry troublesome without tongs.

Can you put up a link for the tongs and knife?

A honing steel (and how to use it properly, see your local butcher and start slowly :D).

    A salt bowl.

    Pestle & mortar.

    Speed pourers.

About eighty four plastic chopping boards from AKEA.

    Silicone trays.

A slave for washing pots and pans.

sorry just checked back on this thread, both links are from amazon but I know that Arnotts and debenhams sell kitchen tongs and Brown Thomas sell global knives but they're far more expensive in there.

I find a set of Kitchen Tongs absolutely envaluable. I don't understand why more people do not use them
