Should I be worried?

I discovered the following on a recent inspection on a car. Should I be worried?
It’s the rear brake drum on a car that had its rear brake shoes replaced a few weeks ago by a garage.

Just looks like a regular brake drum to me.....I imagine they changed the shoes in the drum a few weeks back

Thanks for your reply, just thought that the outer lip appears to be broken off the hub.

Apologies I see what you mean now.

Looks like some is chipped off. I'm not sure how that could have happened or if it would make much difference. Sorry I didn't spot it straight off

I'd be more worried of other cracks in the brake drum..

Obviously the garage monkies got a bit heavy handed with the Manchester screwdriver when trying to release the drum off the shoes.. They owe you a drum as that would be an NCT fail I think.

you really haven't a clue what you're talking about do you:confused:

why would it fail an NCT exactly?

    @OP

looking at that pic i would imagine that your car has a few yrs on it? the drums tend to rust/corrode due to being open to the elements and so become brittle. while the lip serves to help keep out water and dirt, i would not be overly worried about it but not having the drum in front of me i could not comment on its overall condition. people dont realise that drums, like discs, wear over time and need to be replaced.

as was said already, there may be more cracks in the drum. if the damage to the lip was impact damage from a fall it may well need to be replaced

    imo

I can't see the NCT folk noticing the missing lip, or being overly bothered about it if they do.

Yep your right, but sometimes its enough to be right without the insults, that made your victory less glorious.

IMO the garage shouldn't leave a drum in that condition for a number of reasons,

First, drums are a rotating component and as such, are balanced when made, this drum will now be off balance so will cause excess vibrations and possibly even premature wear on wheel bearings etc.

Second, it is now much easier for water and other containments to get in to the brake shoes and brake cylinder, leading to corrosion/seizing etc.

Third, if the lip of the drum is that brittle, then its very likely that the drum is worn outside its tolerance anyway, so should have been changed.

There are only 2 ways the above damage can happen, either the drum is worn and has a large lip(as above, should have been changed anyway) or the mechanic didn't bother to release the brake shoes before trying to remove the drum and just decided to force it off with a screw driver/hammer.

Thanks for all your comments much appreciated. I will get them to replace the drum as soon as possible. There was a noise origination from the back of the car when travelling around 100 km. I checked all the other bits and pieces and could not find any faults.

As with brake disks/pads etc, drums should only be replaced in pairs.
