I bought a car without a logbook, I'm after getting the required documents to change the ownership and get the log book. One of the forms requires who i bought it off and his address.

I am wondering where or who can give me the registered owners details as i cannot contact him as he has emigrated.

I would really appreciate any help as i want to get the car on the road asap. Thanks.

just went trough all this process when I bought a car from "respectable scumbag family" in Newcastle West that never bothered to send a logbook to Shannon.
Basically none of the previous mentioned forms will do. First you need to get in touch with Dept. of Transport which isn't simple task due to their automatized phone answering system, tell your problem and they will send you a form called STATUTORY DECLARATION. Then you need to fill all the required information and do 2 steps - a) you have to visit authorized dealer of whtever car brand your car is who will verify VIN number. b) get it signed and stamped by solicitor or piece commissioner or Commissioner for Oaths.
Dealer may or may not charge you. Frank Keane BMW which I used didn't charge me at all. Solicitor charged fixed fee of €10 but afaik Commissioner for Oaths isn't allowed to charge anything for this.
Then send it to Shannon. They will then send a letter to previous owner which have then 2 weeks to respond or not to. After two weeks of waiting time Shannon will issue logbook on your name.
I have a copy of the required form available to save your time of getting in touch with Shannon. PM me if you need it.

I didn't know their address either and at the end didn't need to know. They have themselves in the system.

Yeah it is a pain in the ass. Anyone buying a car should insist that the doucments are posted in their presence before paying for the bloody thing ;)

It looks like pretty simple procedure, but I'm wondering about risks.
Assume someone is gone for holidays for a month. He leaves a car on his driveway. When he is away, car get's stolen, and thief sends this form to shannon to change ownership into his some fictional name. After receiving new logbook, thief sells the car, preferabley abroad without any suspicions as he has all the paperwork. Owner when coming back can't do anything, as car is gone long time ago.
Is that kind of system not to vurnelable???

who goes in hollidays for month ... i wish i could.... :pac: ... yes, system looks vulnerable.

i had similar situation , exported car(vw passat '97, diesel)... couldnt get log book off garage from rosscommon, they said that they send same day, i paid money, shanon said, didnt recived anything,.. was playing ping pong for a month, 3 days before ship was leaving Ireland, i went through procedure ... vw garage in sandyford charged me odd 50 euro for VIN check, solicitor - 15 euro, scanned dockets and emailed to shannon with my ferry ticket, (and posted dockets)... lucky , there was one very understanding lady .... (my english at that time was very bad over the phone :P )one day before leaving Ireland,.. i thought start unpack my bags, got a log book.... lucky that postman wasn't lazy that day ..

    Thanks.

I have all the forms i need, but as the car is an irish car I was told that I don't need to bring it to a main dealer, only imported cars need to have the chassis number verified. There are two forms, one for imported cars and one for Irish ones, only difference between them is there's no section for a dealership verification on the one for Irish cars....at least that is what i was told, am i right in saying that?
