The Boss ones seems to be pretty popular.

I've got a Boss RC20 and it does all the simple looping I need without any problems. I think they've changed the model slightly since then. The digitech jamman series are really popular too and seem like they have better spec than the Boss ones. I would have got one of those but I got a good price on a used boss one.

Ive had a Boss RC2, an Akai Headrush, a Line 6 JM4 and now a Digitech Jamman.
They all have their Positives and negatives. For me the Jamman is the best of the bunch but it may depend on what you plan to do with it.

I have a line 6 looper, its handy because its got modelling in it, so can plug straight in and practise with headphones, it can be a bit too complicated though, when all you want to do is just loop.
The boss double looper is grand too, havent ever used the jamman but a buddy has one and says its handy too

I have an RC50 which I love and hate at the same time.
A flawed piece of equipment where the designers could have put simple features in that would have made it so much more versatile.
I have got very good use out of it though.
There's a newer version out which may have corrected some of these flaws.

it all depends how into looping you want to get?
The Boss pedal comes in 3 stages essentially, RC-2(3 now), 20 or 50.
If you just want to play around you'll probly pick up an RC-2 for under 100 quid.
Then if you want to progress move up the ladder, Or look into Ableton Live and such for looping.

I really enjoy my Akai headrush and I can't say I've had any issues with it or found anything wrong with it. I'd recommend it but on the other side I don't have an awful lot of experience with other ones!

The TC Electronic Flashback has a 40 second delay function built into it. It doesn't have an undo function and you can't store loops but if you want to kill two bird with one stone and get a great delay pedal too, it's certainly a viable option.

    How is it flawed?

    Sounds very like the Headrush.

I can't remember all the problems I've had but off the top of my head,
The record/play control can't be assigned through midi.
Any midi in messages are not sent though the device, only midi messages originating from the unit are sent out.

A lot of times I've thought up a way of using it in my setup, it just wasn't able to do it.

You can't change the output from main to sub without having to manually enter it either. Something I've noticed today which also hinders something I wanted to do.

There's also a noticable delay when switching between patches but in the advertising it has you believe that they switch faultlessly and if you were doing a song with (for example) 6 loops, no one would notice switching patches to access the other 3.

I think all options should be available through foot switches if it's aimed at guitarists.
