iPhone won't accept sim card even though I'm out of contract?

Right I'll try and make this brief:

I was with orange for 2 years and a few months ago my contract ended, got my PAC code and switched over to giffgaff. All was working nicely. I dropped my phone in water, and the back light wouldn't work (even thought the phone could still accept calls etc you just couldn't see the screen)

Anyway I got fed up of this and took it into the store to get it replaced. Got a new one but when I got it home and put in my sim card it said

"Only compatible DIM cards from a supported Carrier may be sued to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or vised a supproted Carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card"

Why am I getting this message when I bought the phone from an official store. Any idea how to fix it. Cheers

Sounds like the phone is locked to a different network.

basically I was tied to a 24 month contract with Orange and when this was up I switched to Giffgaff with my PAC code.

I damaged the iphone so I got a repleacemtent fro 119 at the apple store. When I put the SIM in, I got the message:

"Only compatible SIM cards form a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that cam with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card"

I know it's something to do with the phone's IMEI number not matching the SIM card. I brought it into the store but they told me to contact my carrier. Any idea how to fix this? I'd post this on the apple forums but I keep getting "unknown error" when I try to log in or create a new account...tried for literally and hour on different computers with different browsers but still the same, they are so sh1t I gave up

    Cheers

So the store replaced your unlocked iPhone with a new one? If so then the replacement phone they gave you is locked.

you could try unlocking it yourself.

I had a similar thing happen with a replacement iPhone 4 I bought. Even though it's a new phone your original IMEI could be locked to this new one. If thtis is the case it will take a few calls but Apple can fix this as long as you have your original serial number and IMEI.
