I have been told when buying a used car that low* mileage cars should be avoided even if the mileage is genuine and can be verified, does this make sense? why is this?

*below and well below regular mileage

Unless the mileage is so low that it had a detrimental effect on the engine, ie particle filters blocking, exhausts rusting from the inside out etc.

My dad is selling his 07 land rover discovery at the moment, was never really driven, has a total of 30,000 genuine kilometers on it, insane like!

That's impressive!! On the complete other end of the spectrum, my brother has a 00 406 hdi (ex taxi) that has over 600,000 MILES on it and she's still motoring away not a bother!

So how low is too low?
If the average mileage is 10,000 miles - 10,500 miles pa,
Would 3,500 miles pa be enough 'non use' to have a detrimental effect on a car mechanically.

I can't say tbh, it possibly could be in fairness, but maybe it's almost new...? Hopefully someone will enlighten us soon!

How much do you want to spend?
What kind of car do you want?
How many miles do you do per year?
    Any special requirements?

I'd be more concerned with service history than high or low mileage to be honest

Would you consider any other cars or size cars just to help people if they search?

Punto would be cheap and not a bad car, Clio's ok, lots of other good small cars out there too

Thanks Johnos thats very kind of you, I'm haunting donedeal at the moment anyway but thanks, I've been to look at a few one guy said "never mind the mileage its the year of the car that determines the price" while another guy said to me "never mind the year its the mileage you should consider in the price" I thought they were both convincing in how they put and was just wondering what the rest of you folk thought. I was leaning towards non-use leading to rust etc. now I'm not so sure

Also consider Suzuki swift and daihatsu sirion

At your price level I'd buy the car in the best condition never mind age and mileage :)

Might I also point out that the Yaris has a higher price than a similar age Corolla. The Corolla however will be more powerful and nicer to live with and return similar MPG :)

Not sure if this will be too big for you but they are very easy to drive and light on fuel

I'm currently using one with 170k miles on it

It would be a tiny part of the running costs and worth it for comfort and safety

I have a 96 fiesta 30.000 on the clock still in show room condition and only take it out now and again for a run

The yaris has a way better driving position than the corolla, it also has a 4 star ncap rating vs the corollas 3 stars

I'd prefer a Corolla over a Yaris on a long trip. I'm not going in to crash safety too much but I would still prefer to be in a larger car

Corolla seats are WAY too low and unsupportive

I didn't find them uncomfortable but there was no support if you were pushing on at all.

I still would prefer one over a Yaris but the Yaris is still a great car

If its a corolla, chances are it'll be a bottle green liftback :o

I'm currently driving my parents 2007 Chevy Aveo 1.2 with just over 18k on the clock. ABS light is on but when i brought it up to 140 (eventually ) on the motorway it went off again and stayed off . Any reasons why or did it just need a good run....it probably never saw past 80 before!
