    Hi folks,

Am sure this has been brought up before, searched but didn't find what I was looking for. Anyway, as per the title, what's the legal position in relation to using spring traps in ROI, such as fenns, bodygrippers, and such. Or indeed any legal tidbits on them.

    Thanks,

    John.

    SI 620/2003:
(ii) a spring trap which is not a gin trap and which is designed to secure either-
    (I) the immediate death, or
(II) the immediate unconsciousness and subsequent death without intervening consciousness,
of wild birds or wild animals which it is designed to trap,
Bodygripper traps are meant to fall into that category, though some folks seem to think that they don't work that well for that. If they could prove that point, they'd be illegal - as far as I can see, they haven't done that in Ireland yet, but this isn't my area really.

Gin traps are banned(as per Sparks post) while Fenn traps are allowed for mink

PS: The derogations on birds classed as vermin set out the type of traps that can be used on Grey Crows and Magpies - these state that cage traps only are allowed ie. Larsen, Ladder traps etc.

Yeah, wouldn't be worried about birds they're not in this equation.

Have you a link to the legal bit regarding Fenns as mink only? There are two types, a larger and smaller. I know in the UK they're used for rats, mink, squirrel I think and also rabbits, what I want to know is what's the correct position here.

Not asking for myself by the way, info for another man, which is why I ask for clarification.

I just saw a recommendation on the NPWS web site for the use of Fenns on mink. I'm assuming there ok to use on other mammal species classed as vermin under the law such as rats, rabbits etc. but probably best to drop an email to the NPWS to be sure:)

Yeah, that's on my list as well. Reason I'm asking here is to see what's thrown up on it.
