My contract ends on the 5th of May.

Can I give notice to them now that I want my subscription cancelled on the 5th May or do I have to wait till the 12 months is up first and get caught for another month.

Which is absolute BS. The notice periods are minimum terms. You're entitled to give longer notice if you so wish.

The likelihood is that their system isn't set up for it/they hope they'll sneak an extra month out of it.

Dont they make money from every phone call you make to them?
