My New PMMM (Poor Mans Marine Master)

    Well Folks,

After lots of browsing and reading through threads here and elsewhere, I finally got round to buying myself a good watch.

I love the look of the Seiko divers, especially the Marine Master. While I can't afford the full on Marine Master (circa €2000), a 'poor mans' version based on the SKX007 was the way to go.......for 15% of the cost !

I decided on a custom watch, modified by Rob van Herpt at http://www.monsterwatches.eu/eu/index.php/home

He started out with a Seiko SKX007 on a Super Solid Oyster Bracelet
He then changed the SKX007 dial & day/date wheel and hands for an SKX171 dial and Seiko Samurai Ti hands
I asked for the tip of the second hand to be coloured red.

I'm delighted with the quality of the watch and Robs work.
He comes highly recommended on the Seiko forums.
The watch has a great heft to it and feels very solid on the wrist. Definitely seems much more expensive that it really is. The bracelet is solid, no rattles and sets of the rest off the watch.

    On to the pics...

Your watch looks great, 007's are a great watch, built
like a tank yet really comfortable.

Just modded one myself about an hour ago,
Just a Seiko with FFF blue in Blue, may swap out the second hand
    later to a red tip.

Well wear, it looks really nice.

Some really cool stuff on that site. I like the Fifty Fathoms inspired one.

I have the yellow face version of the 007 , the skxa35 and it's my fav watch. Congrats on your purchase. A watch worth 3 times the price.

Thanks for the comments guys, really loving the watch.
I'm looking for a display caseback for it, any ideas on where to get one?

I've seen good things about Harold at http://www.yobokies.com/

If you email him at yobokies@yahoo.com.hk he'll get back to you fairly quickly. These backs are $32 shipped.

Seiko SKX007...pound for pound the best watch you can buy imho

I like the #3 caseback, but it would be nicer without the logo in the centre.
Seemingly the clear caseback from the Seiko 5's will fit the 007 and it looks good, no logo.

    Little update to this thread...

I got in touch with Rob about a display caseback and he kindly sent me one from a Seiko 5 that will fit the 007. And the best bit, it was free of charge !

I also got a new strap for the watch. It's a WatchGecko Rally design strap.
Love the retro look with it, real 70's look

    Hi
I came across your threrad as im looking to buy an SKX007.
I emailed that guy Rob in the link you gave a few days ago but have not heard back.

Im looking to get an SKX007, oyster bracelet, clear basesment back case, red tip on the seconds hand.

Does he usually take long to get back to you?

I would love to get one in the next few weeks but if i dont hear back I may have to go the creationwatches.com route.

    Lovely watch OP

Haven't got round to taking pics, but I've had the case, bezel and bracelet brushed. Makes the watch much better looking with the shiny polished edges gone!

The brushing was done by Emily at Watchrepairs.ie
