Neogeo CD questions

Is there any region lockout on the Neogeo (topload) Cd consoles ?

Can a Japanese console with a NTSC J CD play the game in english for example or is the language settings hardcoded to the console ?

    Too late :)

Found the answer I needed, jumper to add/remove. I'm patient enough, I can lash thru a few levels of Panzer Dragoon while waiting for stuff to load.

Life is too short for NeoCD load times!

If this were some one off stand alone thing with it's own unique games then it would be worth owning.

I guess it's also worth owning for collecting sake.

But all of the games (bar Ironclad) are available in both AES and MVS format. AES is out of the question unless you're a millionare - but MVS can be very nicely priced.

If you want to go the Neo Geo route then buy an MVS 1 slot and one of those vogatek superguns. You're not talking about a lot of money either.

I had one, don't have it any more.
For the price of a NeoGeo CD you could have a MVS Board, Supergun and a MVS Multicart, more fun, less time waiting.
    You may say to yourself
"The Last Bandit, you don't have to worry about that, loading times are worth it when the games are great"
And you know, once I may have agreed with you...
Except, I'll give you an example,
Turn on the system, game inserted into the drive,
    Loading....
Up pops the main menu, select the Vs Com mode...
    Loading....
Up pops the character select, pick the Ryu analogue and lets get to the fig...
    Oh,
    Loading...
Then the opening banter,"HA HA, I will defeat you little girly man!", here we go!!,
    Bugger!
    Loading....

And so on, it's a complete pig, a drag in it's entirety and takes all the fun out of Neogeo games.

I had it and a near complete range of *cough*backups*cough* but the loading times were a complete pig.

Get rid of it man, think of the children!!!

    You'd imagine so, and then....
But, like an Alfa Romeo, you can't be considered a true retrogamer until you own something branded NeoGeo, and no, the Pocket Color doesn't count!

You could have had my old C5, now there was an expensive car to repair... :(
Then so is my Scenic II, heap of sh1te,

I buying a Hilux next time, if the Taliban reckon they're good enough to lug a 50cal around the desert in, and without a regular service arrangement, its good enough for me!

Why the Neo Geo CD sucks dick:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,726 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Ah cool a juggling monkey :)

Console was cheap enough, my only regret is not buying more stuff to make the most of the shipping costs. Edge emu are dropping their neogeo isos soon so gotta get busy.

They aren't that big, I seem to remember them being a little awkward to burn, hope you understand cue sheets!

The other reason the Neo Geo CD is to be avoided...
The internal mechanism is clever but it'll die after a few tens of hours use. And the reason is a silly one. Unlike Nintendo and Sega and NEC and basically every other pad manufacturer, SNK didn't use a durable fulcrum. Instead of a hard plastic hemisphere against a hard PCB, SNK has the end of the d-pad's shaft resting in a soft plastic bowl, and like every N64 user will tell you, plastic rubbing on plastic creates a lot of dust. In the SNK pad, this dust gets into every part of the d-pad, including the partially-sealed switches, and it basically stops working.

    Wow, that's some bad design!

Megadrive D pads didn't use the dome until later in the console's life. (Think Megadrive model 2 with the red start buttons, although I've seen some without I think)

Most of the early ones I've come across have a rubber pad under the D pad. These wear out in a similar way to those Neo Geo ones.

They don't spew dust all over the pcb though!

And yet, both SNK have a rep of untold controller goodness...
Another reason why only an AES or MVS will do, and not to messing about with half measures like CD systems!
That little pad was nice too.
Actually, I have both the full size AES stick, which is awesome and has a lovely cracked knob and I have a the excellent and some feel even better Neo Geo stick that was, ironically, released at the same time as the CD System. It's more compact than the full AES and still is very well built.

Well armed with this I'm sure I'll figure out a suitable replacement controller if needed.

No stop wrecking my buzz... damn thing won't arrive for a few weeks..

He he, waiting for the misery to arrive, you should have known better than to tell us before checking it out online, finding what we were likely to tell you.
I, at least, have personal experience of the thing.

And, on a brighter note, the likes of Blazing Star and Pulstar play just fine, with not too much loading.
And think yourself lucky you didn't buy the CD-Z.
That has more ram and a faster cd-rom drive but is prone to technical issues and is not as reliable as the top loading version.
