2005 Ford Focus EGR valve

I'm getting the odd shudder while driving and it feels like the car momentarily loses power. I've had it in the garage twice to no great improvement. Googled the problem myself and it suggests cleaning the EGR valve. I'd be pretty confident cleaning it but any web advice and Haynes manual are for changing the EGR out. This unfortunately needs Ford diagnostic equipment to introduce a new valve. I'm just wondering would anyone know if unplugging the old one will bring up any similar problems.
