My laptop is getting stuck on the welcome screen, I can see the page trying to load but nothing's happening. My OS is Vista and I know thats the whole problem but I wonder if anyone knows how to fix this. I have tried the old reliable ctrl-alt-del but thats not working either.

Your first stop should be LKGC:

Press F8 right after the POST screen to bring up the Windows boot menu. Choose "Last Known Good Configuration". If that fails, try "Safe Mode" and check if it will load.

Maybe the hard drive's gone south. UBCD offers a variety of test tools.

Before you do anything else, you might grab a Linux Live distro and backup your files while you still can.

Hard drives are one of the very few mechanical parts in a laptop (besides DVD drive and fan) and given their fragility, they're likely the first component to fail in mobile computers. Consider a solid state disk as replacement (60 GB drives sell from around 80 Euro), they're insanely fast compared to platter hard drives and no mechanical parts.
