.22lr handgun

hi all, basicaly ive been shooting for years and have had many rifles but
ive never had a handgun. i currantly have a shotgun. how hard is it to get a licence for one and what hoops will i have to jump trough to get one?. cheers.

Easy or hard it will depend on your needs if your willing to 'Go that extra mile'

The leagal requirements are that the pistol must only be capable of holding 5 rounds max. Next if the handgun you want is on the garda's list then that makes it a little more easy.

The only valid reason to own a handgun is for target shooting so to meet this requirement you must be a member of a shooting range that is cleared for handgun shooting.

The handgun is not a restricted firearm so only normal security is needed. Unless the Super requires you the upgrade your existing security.

Also I see a few colt 1911's getting licensed at our club.

Pistols
A target shooting pistol is a precision instrument designed for competitions such as those seen at the Olympic Games. They are .177 air or .22 inch rimfire calibres (.22 inch long, .22 inch long rifle). These pistols are adjustable to the shooter and have a small capacity magazine (up to 5 rounds). These pistols are different in appearance to and are unlikely to be confused with those designed for use by military/police forces in combat confrontation with adversaries. Suitable makes and models for this purpose are listed in the Commissioner’s Guidelines on firearms licensing.

ANNEX F: SUITABLE OLYMPIC STANDARD PISTOLS
The following .22 calibre firearms, although not exhaustive, come within the definition of section 4(2)(e)(iii) of the Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order, 2008 as amended. Accordingly, applications for certificates for these NON RESTRICTED firearms (with a magazine capacity not greater than 5 rounds) should be made to the local superintendent of the Garda Síochána where the applicant resides.
