The glow plug light is flashing for a week now.
Whats the craic with this on a 2007 transporter 2.5tdi?

I smelt a bit of burning today with the fan on the windscreen on no1/2/or 3..

Went to a mechanic today who was giving me a list of problems opposed to solutions on a historical basis how hiaces were far better (bollox they are)- kinda felt like saying your a f*cking mechanic just f*cking fix it and stop talking sh*te. Sorry but he really pissed me off!!

Is it really half a days work to replace these yokes which u dont need for the summer anyway?
Also am i better off going to the main dealer for this for proper specialist solution opposed to a micky mouse mechanic with an ipod from liddle as an electronic sensor for vw faults - cant believe how rude some mechanics can be - raging over his rudeness

he said he wasnt even sure of ot were glow plugs - & vw said its an engine fault sensor.....

    before you pay anybody anything

a flashing heater plug light means the BRAKE LIGHTS are not working

so ... what other problems are you having

No it doesn't. It can mean that. It is certainly the first thing to check as it is probably the most common reason for the light to flash but there are other reasons as well.

well it came on when we launched the boat for the first time - and my buddy reversed down a slip way and slammed on the breaks 2-3 times in the salt water! perhaps i should power hose the wheeels first eh - b4

Did you do a quick a simple test to see if the brake lights are working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭Ned_led16

    yup

handy have a diagnostic vag com cable, in ebay you can get it for around 20 quid delivered, and download a software for free from here , youll see why it is flashing. most of the times, it will show directly where problem is. in that situations better do diagnostics, than try guess where problem is. did your mechanic did diagnostics ? if he did, so he knows what to do, to fix that... or he is trying rip off you.

Just pressed the break and the break lights are not working!

Looks like its not an engine fault or the glow plugs eh

    Powerhose the wheels??

Whats the idea behind using the glow plug warning light to tell you the brake lights are not working?

Well i dont know! I power hosed the wheels and the brake lights wont come on - there is a little wear on the wheel cylinder - maybe the brakes are gone? i cant see any pad left..... but its tricky to see

does that mean the glow plugs are fine as the break lights dont work

well, you can get basic scanners for most of cars, like elm 327(i have that thing also), cost around 30 quid, number softwares free, just read and reset codes and service intervals, handy for diy . there is number of such tools, google is your best friend. That vag com is for most vw and audi group cars, i have original vag com, but it cost around 250 quid, but more capabilities than that cheap stuff.

Why not? it's a simple and effective way of warning you to the fact something is wrong. Most people when presented with a flashing glow plug light will either drive to their dealer and fork out or search google and decide it might be wise to press the brake pedal while someone stands behind the car and does a visual check on the lights.Of course you will always get one who thinks power hosing the wheels might fix it........\/

Any mechanics open Paddys day in Cork? doubt it

Your pads may well be gone but that won't cause the glow plug light.

So you just confirmed you pressed the brake pedal and the brake lights aren't working? i'd go with brake light switch.

I am not saying that there should not be a warning, there should, especially for brakes, but I am just curious why they have used the glow plug light. They could have used the handbrake light, or the low brake fluid light or some other.

the glow one is hardly going to draw some peoples attention.

Well smarty pants - the idea behind powerhosing the wheels was to remove the salt water that had got into the wheels and brakes from reversing the van boat and trailor into the sea water! but thanks for tip - brake light switch - kewel! i thought there might be a correlation between salt water and the flashin dashboard light after all ive heard lots of people say how the salt water kills the car but you think that was stupid! hey im not a mechanic but thanks a mill for pointing out what it might be - lol if its that you da man if not well ballix to it then
