A friends sky + sd is playing up on the subscription channels. changed to my box and same result, free to air are ok, this is in ireland by the way, rang sky but instead of new card, after all the usual checks, was offered a free hd box, free install, warranty etc for 12 months only pay 15 euro pm. sky are confident new box will work!! tv is hd ready but only via component!! new sky hd has no component. first offer was a call out of 100 euro and a sd box!! that was cancelled.

is there a foolproof method to prove card is faulty!! not bothered about hd!! pays 29 euro pm. they are ederly so wont ring and cancel package.

tv is hd ready but only via component

The phrase "HD Ready" means essentially the TV does something more than SD but we don't want to tell you what.

Without HDMI and HDCP you don't really have an HDTV (native 1920 x1080i 25fps 50Hz minimum in Europe) or HD Ready (any resolution but able to show 920 x1080i 25fps 50Hz content in Europe). For years I told people don't buy an SD LCD as they are rubbish generally, buy HD Ready for Analogue, composite or SCART "SD" and if you want "HD" only buy one with HDMI, HDCP and at least 1920 x 1080 native.

is there a foolproof method to prove card is faulty?
Post a photo (or possibly email) of the card split through chip or with dog canine shaped hole in chip. Generally the cards work or don't, They usually don't work due to child cracking it or dog chewing it.

Surely sky can't force people to spend extra on an HD sub.

    What does "playing up" mean?

with a faulty sub card the usual complant is that you will get blocking on the subscription channels eg rte1 etc, then when you elect a fta eg sky news it works ok, sky have a fault no 5 code for faulty card, but at the moment both boxes give either 25 or 28 and the message is either no satellite signal being receieved or unplug box etc, so say you ar watcging rte 1 pic ok for a few mins then it will distort and then either say no signal or unplug etc. i assumed it was the box so kindly used my sd sky + same result, i cant pair this card to my box as i have setanta paired to it. i have done all the checks known to man, can it be the lnb? i intend to try a spare thomson hd box tommorrow.

to do call out they want 100 euro and a refurb box, i was the one who was offered the 15pm thing and that was a bit better but afterwards realised tv not hd. i want them to cancel but like the tv 2 much. 5 years subs and sky want 100 euro.

Threaten to cancel & mention you are considering UPC (even if they don't service your area) and viola, free callout & replacement of faulty equipment.

Pairing used to be only needed for premium channels.

So indeed does sound like an LNB fault. Could be related to one band or polarity, more obvious if you check all channels, or see per transponder level in installer menu rather than the default transponder level.

Could also be water ingress, or cable problem if ****ty cable was used or joined badly somewhere.

well an update, left box hooked up to my dish all night, everything ok this am, so went back to house set up box .... and all ok no glitching, changed channels etc but could not get it to glitch then went on roof(raining) 2 cables connected to ... an OCTO lnb, one was loose, shook it got no sat signal, tightened up the 2 cables and even used 2 different outlets, so all appears to be OK.

Cancelled the sky offer and will await a report back. Surprised an octo was fitted, elderly person in house.

    thanks for all replies
