Hey everyone, I'm 19 and have been out of school since I was 17. Hoping to apply for BTEA for when I go back to school in september to repeat the leaving cert.

I'm wondering if I was to apply now 6 months prior to going back would I be put onto the allowance straight away or will I have to wait until september? I'm currently studying about 6 hours a day and doing some programming work preparing for college but as you can imagine its hard living on 100 a week so would love to get the extra 88.

Anybody have any information on this. I'm going to go into the welfare office tomorrow I'm just wondering in advance.

    Thanks.

You should find this helpful. Its long and some of the information you are looking for is not easily found but its all there.
But I cant see you getting the BTEA is paid until you are actually on the course if i am honest.

Great thanks for the help. I would tend to agree but you never know with things regarding social welfare. Thanks again.

Your Back to Education Allowance will only commence when you have been approved for it, show evidence that you have obtained a place on a course, have registered for it and are in attendance at the school/college. If all is in order you will also receive the cost of education allowance which is likely to be €300 this year. http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/BackToEducation/Pages/SecondLevelOption.aspx

In the meantime, if you are claiming a Jobseekers payment, you need to be looking for work and available for full time work.

In view of the fact that it is a second level option that you will be pursuing you will have to prove that you have been out of formal education for 2 years so in anticipation of you applying for BTEA you should get a letter from your previous school stating the final date that you left. Its handy to have it available and not have to be looking for it at the final minute. BTW good luck with your return to education.

Just saw on your post that you are repeating the leaving cert. Have you previously sat the leaving cert or did you withdraw before sitting it. If you have previously sat the leaving cert it is unlikely that you will qualify for btea.
