Say hi to [...] for me

Why do people say this, exactly? Is it just a gesture to you to show that they acknowledge the existence of the person in question or are you supposed to actually tell that person "Jimmy says hi". Does anyone do that?

It's even weirder in France when someone tells you to give your wife a kiss from them. I'm not sure if you're supposed to lay the tongue in and say with a wink that that's from Jimmy or weirdly give your OH a peck on the cheek.

It's just being polite for crying out loud. Do you begrudge the lungful of air or something?

It's just people trying to be polite

It's just simply passing on your good wishes to a mutual friend/acquaintance.

It's just polite and it shows that you're thinking of them. If I speak to any of the relations, I'll say "Say hello to [name]/the family from me". It's just nice that's all :)

    Ah it's just being nice.

Though I usually ask how someone is and then say "tell [...] I was asking for them"

Oh, if you see her today, tell you girlfriend I had that weird sex dream about her again last night.

ya, you should pass the message on. .

I don't see a problem really. It's like the generation before us saying ...tell mary I was asking for her".

    nothing wrong with that.

Yeah but, are you supposed to actually say it to the person? What do you say back to someone who says this?

Yeah, definitely, I will do that?
    Thanks?
Say hi to some other random person I don't care enough about to contact myself?

Same as Tell [...] I was asking for them.

I usually do if I remember. For example if I say to the mother, "Oh, I saw [...] the other day", she'll respond with, "Oh really? How's he getting on?"

Then I'll say, "Grand, he was asking for ya."

And she'll declare that she always liked [...] and that I should never have broken up with him and he was great husband material and together we could have given her lots of grandchildren.

Can't help but laugh to myself whenever someone says hello on another persons behalf. I always imagine them to be channelling the other persons thoughts to me. Ask a return question when it happens and wallow in the awkward confusion that it causes.

I always pass on the message anyway, and often say it myself. Another would be 'send them my love', and all it basically means is I'm thinking of them. No great mystery behind it.

You don't really understand how "in before..." works, do you? Or any aspect of comic timing, probably.
