    Yours truly,

If you go into it all worked up which posts like this indicate you are it will hurt like a mother fu**er because that's what your sub concious is expecting.

If you go into it knowing you have a competent dentist who knows how to use anaesthetic you won't feel pain - a bit of discomfort yes but this almighty "pain akin to labour" that people talk about is an exaggeration manifested by their own minds. Be positive - you will be fine. (unless of course you want to come back later to wow us with the pain you endured :))

unless you are going down a backstreet alley to have it done, then it will be fine - no pain. its a normal procedure.

The hardest part is keeping your gob open for that length of time.....That's what SHE...No, I won't do that. Hmm, maybe the worst part is the damage done to your bank account. I remember mine costing a little over 700. Baxtards!

But, yeah. Not nice. Instead of getting my root pulled it was cauterised.

I had a root canal done by that freaky nun in the bottom right corner. Now that was painful.

Last time I went for a root canal, as the D was drilling he hit a nerve and I felt it (not fun), he gave another injection thinking the anaesthetic hadn't got everywhere or fully worked. When he started drilling the same thing happened again (even less fun than the first time).
He said it was in my mind and plugged the gap and told me to come back the next day. Later that same day after the anaesthetic wore off was in so much pain I had to go back and begged him to sort it out, injections were given drilling started and he hit nerve again, this time I bit the nurses finger.
He again said all in my mind, sent me home with serious painkillers and said come back tomorrow.

Next day he gave about 5-6 injections, drilled, again hit nerve (seriously not enjoying things now), anyway he finally took x-rays and saw an extra nerve coming in from an odd angle, gave me a few injections with a huge hooked needle that went right into my jaw and was able to finish with no more problems.
I'm slightly wary of going to the dentist now. :)

    Oh, good luck OP enjoy.

    +1.

I'd rather just go for the extraction and be done with the damned thing after my root canal.

I had one a couple of years ago, after 4 months of agony.

Ask for extra anasthetic and if your dentist allows it, earphones for music.

Maybe I've blocked it out but I don't remember it being *that* bad...

Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth,
    And spotted the perils beneath,
    All the toffees I chewed,
    And the sweet sticky food,
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

I wish I'd been that much more willin'
When I had more tooth there than fillin'
    To pass up gobstoppers,
    From respect to me choppers
And to buy something else with me shillin'.

When I think of the lollies I licked,
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
    Sherbet dabs, big and little,
    All that hard peanut brittle,
    My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My Mother, she told me no end,
"If you got a tooth, you got a friend"
I was young then, and careless,
    My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
    But up-and-down brushin'
    And pokin' and fussin'
Didn't seem worth the time... I could bite!

If I'd known I was paving the way,
    To cavities, caps and decay,
    The murder of fiIlin's
    Injections and drillin's
I'd have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lay in the old dentist's chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine,
    In these molars of mine,
"Two amalgum," he'll say, "for in there."

How I laughed at my Mother's false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath,
    But now comes the reckonin'
    It's me they are beckonin'
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth

I only had a deep filling yesterday and had to get three sets of anaesthetic.
Had the option of root canal or tooth pulled a month ago. Bye bye toothy:(

Not a chance I'd get a root canal.
    Best of luck though OP.

Got one a couple of months back, didn't hurt and now I have a cool smooth filling on the back of my tooth.

You will probably die (seems more appropriate for AH)

Wasn't so bad. In fact it was quite pleasent, as the dentists boob kept rubbing me as she was working.
    :)

In all honesty tho, it wasn't as bad as I expected!

    Teeth are overrated.
    Don't do it OP.

Edit: Was ok. He got boob. Nice.

(I hope the dentist was female!)

    Dear Lord,
    I humbly beseach thee,
To make this randomers root canal pain free,
I understand you do this kind of thing,
As well as helping Jeniifer Lopez' rich mum win 1 million on the slots in Vegas,
Because the Saints intercede with you on our behalf for things like this,
Its just the millions of abused starving children in Africa whose torment is part of your unalterable 'plan',
Thank you O Creator of the 40 billion Light year wide universe for salving the ache of this particular Homo Sapien.

    Amen

I hope you approve of my prayer.

I had root canal's done on my two front teeth about 6 years ago, genuinely never felt a thing. As chance would have it and this thread was started, I had to visit my dentist this morning to fix a chip on the front right tooth. No need for an anasthetic which was great because of the root canal. Have to go back in a couple of weeks to have the left one evened out. Best dentist ever! and I've been going to her for years.

I had two done a few years ago, there is no pain involved at all because the area is numbed. The worst part is the back of your head can get very uncomfortable lying there for so long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭Air_Bass

I got a root canal a few weeks back and it's actually nothing to worry about at all. I was dreading it aswell but the only uncomfortable part was having that plastic clamp thing holding your gob open for a couple of hours. Fear not my friend you will be fine !

    He did, actually..

I had one done myself about a month ago. Dentist drilled the tooth, squeezed my chin, & exclaimed 'Oooh I can see the pus coming up now'.

    Looooovely.

I had a decay problem and the choices were 200-odd for an extraction or 1000+ for a root canal. I'm glad that I was a cheap fecker. I didn't know at the time that root canals were painful. They sound rather neutral.
