Crunching Sound from Rear of Car

This morning with no prior warning when i started to break, my car made a horrible crunching sound (sounded like it was coming from the rear of the car). Is this likely to be just brake pads or could it be something more serious. The car is a 00 Honda Accord 1.8 petrol and has done very little mileage in the last 3 months, approx 500 miles.

Did it just happen once, or do you hear it every time you brake?

You need to look at your rear brake pads or shoes, I don't know which is fitted to your car. One of them may have broken up due to rust if the car has had very little use, alternatively you may have a a stone or other piece of debris caught in the brakes.
