How come they never built a road in the channel tunnel??

Were the british & french lobbied by the ferry companies? afraid that their companies would go to the wall?

Because that would require seperate tunnels for trains and cars. More of a safety risk too to let people drive through it. Finally, the train carrying the vehicles travels a lot faster than what a car would be allowed to drive through the tunnel.

IIRC there were studies done of different options, the road tunnel version had huge ventilation needs (infernal combustion!) they even considered building piers a couple of miles out from each side and then going down/up spiral ramps to the tunnel to reduce the length of the tunnel. Also, the consequences of a crash or a vent fan breakdown would be catastrophic.
