Good evening lads, I'm going getting back into lamping with lurchers for next winter and I'm thinking that now is the time to buy as people could be getting out ofit after the winter. Am I right in thinking this?

Also what is the best dog for it? My old dog was a collie X whippet would another one be a good choice? I won't be going for foxes with it either only rabbits.

Also could anyone name a good lamp? Il be buying second hand preferably.

    Thanks

Mostly nice level dry ground with stubble or grass on it or recently sown cereals.

    collie x whippet x greyhound
    bedlington x whippet x greyhound
    saluki x whippet x greyhound

Any of these mixes will be grand for bunnys. What i would look for is Greyhound men giving away full bred dogs because they didnt make the track;) even know they didnt make the track they will still be alot faster than most:cool: and there free!!!!!

    Sportsden
    on boards sale/wanted section
gumtree for lamps. ;) a new lamp will run you 60-140e why buy second hand?

Cheers for that bud. I thought that lamps were a lot more than that.

Should I buy now or wait til later in the year? What age should I get it at? My old dog was about 8 months when I got her. Bitches are better aren't they?

I had lurchers coursing from they were 6 months, i think it depends on the dog but 8 months sounds goood

Again depends on the dog, had great dogs and great bitches over the years so either way it depends on the dog.

I told the brother today that I'm going buying another lurcher and he said he's going to get back into the ferreting and he'd like a dog for grabbing the rabbits as they go into the net. Would I be better off buying a pup and getting him used to the ferret myself or buying an older dog that already is?

Also which of the crosses that you mentioned with be most suitable with the ferret?

Buying a lamp only buy a lf 170. I messed around for years making lamps buying cheap one's but I was never happy. When I bought the lf I couldn't believe the light out of them even with filter they are deadly.

But that's my opinion and you won't be short of lads here with the same opinion

If you wanna hunt with a ferret best thing is to rear both ferrets and dog together, I'd go with something half-collie. My old lurcher is half collie, quarter greyhound/quarter deerhound. She will mark any burrow with a rabbit in, wont go in on net bound rabbits, tolerates ferrets and terriers as she was raised with both !!

she is the cleverest dog I ever had, makes a mockery of young dogs now :D

I've got a dog and lamp at last :D

This evening the brother came home with a 1/2 whippet x 1/4 greyhound x 1/4 pitbull and a lamp (the lad he got it from didn't know the make and there's no sticker on it but it's good) on trial from one of his friends cousins.

We brought him out at 8 this evening, there was a good breeze, a nice bit of drizzle and it was pitch black; perfect lamping conditions! We got 6 rabbits in 2 hours and we could have gotten more if it weren't for human error, myself and the brother haven't lamped in about 5 years so we're a bit out of practice :P. We gave one rabbit to the dog so there's 5 for a stew tomorrow :D

That lad wanted 250 for the dog, lamp and battery but the brother reckons he'll get him down to 220. I can't wait to try him out on a fox, I reckon he'd make shit of one. I'll throw up a few pictures tomorrow if I can get the camera working.

Thanks for all the advice lads!
