I just got my 1st iMac a few weeks ago and am still struggling to get to grips with it. Yesterday and today my Mac went to sleep after an idle period and I could not get it to wake up again, I ended up having to turn it off at the switch and turn it on again. I am sure this is not good for it, is there a way to reactivate it or is this a problem.

There seems to be no one solution to this, going on this 30 page Apple article.

You can stop the imac sleeping altogether by going to:

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Slide bar to the right to "Never"

Also if you are using wireless keyboard, plug in a wired one as some say that the bluetooth is the problem.

Also try pulling out the power cord for 5 minutes before you power up.

    Best of luck
