    cheers for the reply ,have no idea myself.A chap i know who isnt on the net(old lad) bought it for a euro so i told him i would try get some info on it.He was told it was a snuff box but again i don't have a clue.

    Actually i'm wrong. I reckon its a stamp box for holding postage stamps.
    There was a silver on in my grannie's house almost exactly the same design and teh envelope shape would tend to bear this out.

    There was a time when people communicated almost exclusively by writing letters..very few people had telephones and travelling was extremely expensive and time consuming..and obviously there was no such thing as email.

    Most people would have written several letters a week just to friends and family and some would write dozens of letters and used a lot of stamps...hence it was handy to have a supply!
