So Ive been recording a podcast with my friends. Ive edited it and Im trying to upload it to wordpress via the 'box widget'. But Im having major trouble with it.

The file Im trying to upload is 491mb and its a WAV file. I know this should take a significant amount of time to upload but I cant seem to figure out a way to make it happen. I also cant attach the file to an email for what ever reason?

Any suggestions are welcomed as my techie knowledge is very basic! Hope I posted this in the right place.

    Regards,

    Ken

    Stop now!

Nobody will download a 491 mb podcast and you don't want to distribute it either!! And you're probably timing out as you upload it ... anywhere including e-mail. Most email servers will limit your attachments.

You should convert it to Mp3 format with a bit rate of 128kb. You could probably do less if it's all speech.... down to 48k. That should give you a lighter file size that benefits everyone.

BTW if it contains copyright music you'll need a licence from IMRO.

Its all speech. How do I convert it to a 128kb or a 8kb mp3? Would it still be the same length and would it be quicker to upload/download?

What software did you use to record it? Usually this will allow you to save in different formats. Otherwise Google WAV to MP3 converters.

If it's speech you could make a 48 or 64k mono file. Length would be the same - just a smaller more manageable file to upload and download.

As a comparison point, some of the podcasts I listen to are around 35MB for 1h 16m, 25.9MB for 56m and 27.5MB for 30m. All mp3 and obviously different bit or compression rates, but it gives you an idea of what to aim for.

I recorded it an olympus dictafone. I checked there its running at 48 mins. When I recorded it, it was over an hour. It had a bit rate of 32kbps and it was 14.4mb. I then had to convert it to a WAV file so I could edit it in audacity. I subsequently edited out nearly 20 mins and it ended up as I stated above.

If I simple converted it to MP3 should in theory my podcast reduce in bit rate and mb to somewhere near its original size?

    Thanks for your help lads!

Convert it to Mp3 using the same bitrate (32) and mono.

Always have a look at the file size. You do need to be aware that a bigger file size means more data to be uploaded and downloaded by the user. There's a bit of a trade off you'll have to guesstimate there. If you want the quality, you'll need a bigger file size. If your users are on mobile you'll want to have a file size that's not going to be expensive to download.

If you have a very long interview you might want to consider breaking it up - Part 1, 2 etc.

Also when you are saving your MP3 file make sure you spend a few minutes making sure that ID meta tags are in good order - in otherwords you have it labelled well. Once a podcast is out in the wild it can be distributed without reference to your web site so make sure people can identify you from your podcast if they want more.

Finally, i would recommend bookending your podcast with a message "You're listening to a podcast ... for more visit example.com"
