Eye Exam

I need to have my eyes checked soon and I was just wondering should I pay my local independent optician €70 for the privelage or go to Specsavers for less than half that.

I wear contacts so the exam is more expensive than just a regular eye exam, but I wonder would the test in the local optician be more comprehensive. What's anyone's experience of Specsavers?

Are you in paid employment or holding a medical card then? You might be elegible for a free eye test then you only pay for the contact lens check which should be in the region of €25-€30.

There shouldn't be a difference in eye test quality no matter where you go. The main thing is as long as you are happy with the service.

There are statutory minimum standards for eye exams and contact lens fitting. There is no minimum price though.
You optician may exceed minimum requirements interms of levels of examination, equipment and length of examination. Additional services may be included in the fee like 12 months aftercare, reduced spectacle solution and contact lens prices.
Ask for a total price including exam, aftercare estimated lens and solution use for you over the next twelve months.
For what it's worth I'd expect a very comprehensive exam lasting in excess of 30 mins, aftercare, some high tec equipment and some very competing lens pricing.

I would ask how long each exam will take. If it's 20mins for a full eye exam plus a contact lens consultation then that is too short.

All Optometrists are the same in the same way that all the Doctors/Teachers/dentists/admins are the same, that is to say that they are not. Even exams in a specsavers are different in so far as they are carried out by different individuals who each have their own 'routine' and differing levels of education and experience.
