    Hey,

Not a huge deal I guess, but I am worrying about it.

I applied to a number of companies about jobs recently. Thing is I have my current employer down as a referee. I didn't think this would be a problem as I thought that you'd have to at least get to interview stage/ they'd have to ask you first etc before they ring.

My bf said yesterday that they might phone off the cuff and this has me kind of worried. I'm considering phoning the companies to see what they say and to ask them not to phone. Any advice???

Don't put referees on your CV. Give details if offered job.

I've already sent my CV with the referees on them:confused:

Take referees of CV and add References available upon request instead.

We would not check a reference until we make an offer, too time consuming. Offers are of course dependant on good references.

That said, I'd take the references off your CV.

Any damage is done now: if you call the companies concerned, you'll make them think you're odd / paranoid / accusing them of doing bad things, and this will lower your chances of getting a job with them.

Take the refs off the CV for the future.

For now cross your fingers, pray, think good-karma thoughts, wave chicken bones, etc ... whatever works for you when you ask the universe for good luck.

Used to have them on my CV years ago when I was a grad, nobody ever rang them without letting me know.

You should take them off especially if using recruiters for respect of the privacy of the contact information of the people who were willing to be your referees.

Same here. Getting references is extremley tedious and time consuming. We would only seek them when we are otherwise sure of suitability and would always be conscious of not contacting present employer with clearing it first with candidate.

I can't see why anyone would do it in advance.

Well this is very interesting. I have two ref's named, along with address and phone no on my cv. These should be taken off?

The idea of ref's for me is stressful.

In my last job, I was without any supervisor, except for a couple of weeks.

The previous employment to the one above, my supervisor was let go at the same time as I was. Awkward. :(

Most companies won't go to your current employer for a reference at least before an offer, if not after you've advised your employer. I would recommend putting "references available upon request" on your CV. Prevents prospective employers from contacting your current employer without your permission, but as I said, this is rare.
