So the Irish Times article last week that was denied by an RE spokesperson was actually spot on?.................just saying.

Sad to see but most people in the field knew this was going to happen. RE were pulled from the brink by Stobart but still needed the EI Regional franchise to give themselves a stable market.

This was on the cards for a long time, but as a West of Ireland man the news, however expected, still evokes a sense of sadness.

It may sound provincial, parochial even to say that those of us west of the Shannon (especially here in Galway) regarded the airline as our own.

All sentimentalist nonsense of course but it was a source of pride nonetheless. And while its founder (as a regional carrier) Padraig O'Ceidigh is not one to let his heart rule his head, he can be forgiven if he sheds a teardrop as the last ATR in Aer Arann colours heads to the Aer Lingus paintshop.

I admire the man immensely, and wish him every success in the future and and all the best in dealing with more recent health concerns.

At least Galway is still home to one of the busiest transatlantic airlines around. Aer Arann Islands ;).

Did Aer Arann have a run from Isle of Man to London City airport?

So will a cabin refurb as well as a paint job be on the cards for the ATR’s now?. They could sure do with one.

Also does anybody know if they’ll be moving to T2 or staying put?

Cabin refurb? Don't know but word is that EI were not particularly happy with the general state of the ATRs. No doubt that will change. EI has a certain standard to maintain.

I’m not surprised EI aren’t happy with the condition of some of them. I travel on them quite a bit and so have become used to their condition somewhat, but sometimes on boarding the aircraft gasps can be heard from passengers as well as a few choice comments.

Admittedly some of the passengers would be used to flying on jets and so ATR’s would be a departure for them.

On a side note the 42’s are seriously loud inside, but EI can hardly do anything about that.

I haven't been on a -42 in ages and actually can't remember the interior being that bad - any recent photos around?

The recently painted 42's got sound proofing and a cabin refit as far as I am aware.

Last time i was through EIDW (Dec-Jan) EI Regional flights were all departing and arriving via T1, guessing it will stay that way.

I'm assuming this is to do with the ATR's being a shade small for the air bridges, tho could be, and quite possibly am wrong on that one.

    9. Where do I check in?
From March 25th customers should check in for Aer Lingus Regional flights, operated by Aer Arann at Aer Lingus check in desks. (Passengers departing from Dublin should use the Aer Lingus check in desks located in Terminal 1). Passengers may also check-in online (where available) or at Aer Lingus self-service check-in kiosks (where available). You will require your new Aer Lingus booking reference to check-in.

More info here on the RE website (Strangely enough:rolleyes:)

Yeah, that 42 is EI-CBK. Both BYO and CPT received an interim scheme and refit around the same time. Little work needed on the painting now.

One 42, presumably EI-EHH, will remain in Aer Arann Regional Scheme for IOM-LCY based in IOM. But I doubt that'll last long.

That leaves just REH and REI, both older 72's. Not sure how bad a nick the interior is...

Is the ATR likely to remain EI Regional's platform for the medium term or is there a chance of a switch to Bombardier Q400s to take advantage of their higher cruise speed? (360 knots vs 276 for the ATR72)

I'd say the ATR's will be around for a while yet. If RE proves to be more successful a venture under the Aer Lingus Regional banner, Stobart may invest the time and effort to change the fleet. As it stands, the ATR seems to work well for them, however.

I would guess that as long as the ATR's are bringing in money for the overall Stobart Group they will be happy regardless of what brand they fly under. No sentiment to be expected from that side of things.

Looking forward they could upgrade the fleet to ATR 72-600's, I am not sure how much better the faster Q400 would be as long as SEN/REN are the furthest route that EIR operate.

Before Aer Arann bought the ATR72-500s they looked at the Dash 8-400, the Dash burns more in the cruise and because of the short sectors, where the better speed of the Q400 does not make enough of a difference, they went with the ATR72-500.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,346 ✭✭✭dowlingm

Fair enough - I guess you see longer sectors in these parts so cruise speed tends to make more of a difference.

Aer Arann disappearing? How will I get to Inis Mór now?

    This too shall pass.

That would be a matter for Aer Arann Island's. The more prominent Aer Arann brand will be covered by the Aer Lingus Regional branding.
