    hi all,

been doing some online trawling and coming up with a shortlist for my next car. I think its going to be a diesel this time possibly one of the below

ford focus, mazda 3, volvo s40

all use the same engine a 1.6 turbo peugout unit

is this a good engine, does it require any expensive maintenance? or is it just oil change and fuel filter change every 10k

also i understand the 3 cars listed share the same platform, but not sure whats included in the platform just engine and gearbox or a lot more?

    budget 8k or thereabouts

want something with reasonable space, efficient and reliable

how are are these really behind the vw golf or is it just in this country due to good vw marketing that vw golfs seem to be the prestige model for someone that wants reasonable space efficiency and reliability

realisticly what does this engine do in mpg 50?

The three share the same platform, but aren't identical. The platform is basically the chassis and suspension setup or design, but usually the individual suspension components differ between the marques to fine tune what they each want from their particular car.
Compared to the Golf, the Mk5 Golf was surpisingly poor inside, but they are typically well built. They are refined and well insulated. But the three above all have a better chassis than the Golf, although the Mk 5 is actually quite a good chassis, the Mk 4 Golf was terrible. The Ford and Mazda would be direct competitors to the Golf, the Volvo would be ahead of it.
The S40 is nicely finished and refined, and also comfortable. The Mazda and Ford are both excellent cars, and dynamically are better than the VW, as well as better value. It's a choice as to which you prefer really and which you can get the best deal on.

    May I recommend a Kia Cee'd 1.6CRDI

    It's often over looked.

OP wants something reliable, spacious and cheap to run.

Just giving OP an option they may have considered

Have an S40 with 73K KM on it and am very happy with it. 50 MPG in this climate is not bad. Very comfortable car. Have driven the Golf MK5 and it seems more peppy than the S40 and is definitely 60MPG no problem.

Still prefer the layout and controls for cruise, radio, CD (6), rain sensing wipers and auto dimming rear view mirror on the S40 which BTW are all standard items for that model.

+1, a great unit, better and more reliable than any other 1.6 diesel unit.

    A mix of both.

I've test driven them a number of times but couldn't find one I wanted.

A friend has one and have never had any issue with it and has found the local dealer cheap and very easy to deal with.

In terms of spec I'd put it above the Focus and Mazda.

The Volvo has a better spec level but will cost more and parts which aren't common with the Focus and Mazda can be very expensive. The Volvo can have some niggly electrical faults.

The 1.6HDI need to be serviced correctly and on time and I don't feel a lot of Irish users and mechanics service it with the correct oil or at the correct intervals.

I'd have more faith in a used Kia 1.6 than the others. Also I've found it far nippier to drive than the 1.6HDI

Reason I am asking is they are relatively new to the market and would like to hear of someones experience of maybe having one for three years and putting up 300 k on them. A real test :p

yes we are unaware of how they perform with 300k on the clock, anyone got a link to a test that was done when high miles were recorded

If driving short distances ... well .. on my wifes vw polo 1.6 tdi, 2010 dpf came up just when she was driving half mile a day. when she was working 30 miles away, and driving every day , never had any problems with dpf.

We have the Hyundai I30CW 1.6 diesel and it's a great little car. Fantastic fuel economy and was very cheap to buy. Can't fault it in the four years we have had it not a single thing has gone wrong or broken on her.
