    Hi

For some reason in the last month or so my computer seems to be very slow to react to movements especially in programs.

One of the first things I noticed is the start menu. When you click on anything on the start menu be it a program or game it stall for a second or 2 before opening the program/game.

Also i do a bit of 3d modelling in my spare time and while using AC3D earlier if I had the view to show all 4 views of the model and moved a part the movement would do the same stall for 2-3 seconds.

I have a high spec computer that I built a year or more ago and it has never behaved like this before so im not sure as to whats causing it. I have ran several scans using different anti-virus programs with no avail.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,

Not sure if this is going to be useful to you or not.

Have you installed anything new lately/any software/new hardware (additional ram) as this is a symptom of faulty/bad ram, but normally you may experience other problems computer beeping whilst going through the bios startup.

Have you tried a selective startup, just in case there is a rogue application running in the background that is using 100% processing power.

You may have already come across this, but if you click start, from the search bar run msconfig, select selective startup and untick startup items, restart and do you still have the same problem.

If not it looks like a rogue application or a driver, re-run msconfig click on startup and tick each of the options or even a couple of items, re-start and see which one is causing the problem.

If it is still failing with a selective startup your possibly looking at some hardware failure.

Do you notice any clicking sounds? It could be the hard disk is failing and that is causing the lag. I would certainly check the hard disk to make sure its still performing optomally.
Also open up Task Manager (ALT-CTRL DEL and choose Task Manager)>Performance tab, do you notice high CPU/Memory usage when the slow downs are occuring?

Will give that a go 2moro. I have installed a few programs but they have been on the computer before and never seemed to cause any issues.

Just checked it now and on the CPU Usage History the graph does jump up to the top but on the CPU Usage meter it seems to stay around 12-13%.
Memory seems to sit around the 1.91GB mark and I have 8GB so its only using a quarter of whats available there. Not sure what the issue is with it.

I would check that the CPU Fan is clear of dust and functioning normal. Also download CoreTemp and monitor the CPU temps. I did have an issue a while back that my CPU fan got so clogged with dust while doing any intensive tasks (gaming, encoding etc.) the system would freeze in a similar fashion. Well worth checking that as a possible cause anyways. The CPU usage meter may not update as frequently so may not show the spikes in usage

Will have to open it up thursday because the CPU is watercooled so the cooler fan at the back may be casuing the problem your saying. Its really starting to get annoying

Your anti-virus might have an active scanning function, checks .exe's when they are being opened, when files are read or written etc. and it is a resource hog.

Have a look at your AV settings and see if that is the issue.

Could well be, Core Temp should let you know if the CPU temps are higher than preferable

Have you got Skype running? Occasionally I find it hogging cpu, memory and connections. Actually beginning to lose faith in it lately, but use it extensively to keep in contact with a lot of people, and it is free...
