Hey everyone, just thinking about data loss and how it sucks:D Im going to backup my media about 850gigs worth. Uploading isnt really an option as it would take ages. I do however have another drive anout 500ish gigs in size. Could my media be compressed to 500GB at all? It will take a while so wanted to get views before I put my laptop to the job.

It depends on the type of file. If they're video and audio, then they're most likely compressed already (formats such as JPG, DIVX, AAC, MP3 etc). Some newer file formats (like DOCX, the newer Word files) are also zipped, so you wouldn't get anything out of compressing them again.

There all movies, 99% mkv's. Was looking at a new hdd for the nas but its over €100 for a drive that costed €60 only a few months ago, dam flooding lol

You could re-encode the video/audio at a lower bitrate, but it will take a long time and you will lose quality.

It's not really a 'backup' if it is lower quality, but if a drive died I suppose it would be better to have a LQ version of a movie rather than no movie at all.

    What size typically?

Would take ages........:DI would get like 10MB's read speed off the nas imagine the time it would take haha. The average size is around 3.5GB. I try to keep good bit rates for audio & vid but keep it fairly small aswell.

multimedia files are already compressed so either remove duplicates or re-encode at a lower quality

if the original encoding was poorly done , remember that mpeg standards tell you only how to decompress it might be possible to have the same quality in a smaller file, but extremely unlikely since lossy compression introduces artifacts.

for lossless compression 7zip is hard to beat if you tweak the word and block sizes
