    Hi guys.

Would be very grateful for some basic help here.

Long story short I currently work in a family business that is struggling big time and its only a matter of time before I will be unemployed.
    I'm renting and live alone.
Fortunately I've never been unemployed before so have no clue as to where to even go to find out my SW entitlements etc.
Would I be entitled to a rent allowance and a medical card along with my weekly payment?
Also...what exactly is this called?? Job seekers allowance??
Apologies for my ignorance but sure thats what this forum is here for...to help!

This website will help you figure out the basics.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/

You may be entitled to rent allowance provided that you could afford the rent at the start of the tenancy and have suffered a major fall in income. (or have applied for local authority housing).

Jobseekers' Benefit is the payment you get if you have enough PRSI contributions built up through working.

Otherwise, it's jobseekers' allowance which is means tested. Up to €20,000 in savings is not assessed. But if you have a second property or a load of investments they would be counted as means.

    Good luck!

Unemployment Payment: Claim at your local dole office.

Medical Card: Claim from the HSE, you can do this on line https://www.sspcrs.ie/portal/medapp/

Rent Allowance: Claim from: Use to be welfare officer at health centre but think it's still handled by the HSE. Other's will advise better.

What you get all depends on your personal/household circumstances.
