Tight Hamstrings

    Having been to the physio and getting deep tissue massage my hamstring is still sore/tight.
    I have followed the directions = Walk + Heat+ Stretch + Repeat but it is still too sore to run after FIVE weeks rest.

    Physios are expensive. Not sure where to go next.

    Any ideas.....:confused:

    In before someone tells you to seek medical advice but anyway...

    Yoga is great, as the tightness may not be just coming from your hamstrings only, you might have tight glutes, calves, and inflexible back. Even just do an downward dog pose (look it up on youtube). hold for 30 secs and repeat 3-4 times its stretches out all of the above in one go - they are all connected in a chain.

    Mine are super-tight too. Foam roller, tennis ball, ice and loads of stretching throughout the day seems to help.

    from my experience of tight hams you also have to concentrate on the calves and glutes as well.

    If after 5 weeks of rest you're not seeing any improvement then I'll wager that you're not actually resting it. By that I mean that something you're doing in every day life is having an impact. That might be as simple as just walking around (used to cause problems for me).

    Tight hamstrings can have multiple causes - do you know what caused yours? Did your physio identify the source of the problem? If they didn't find another one. Ask them to do a whole body assessment to find out where you're weak/strong/flexible/inflexible and design you a program to address the problems they identify.

If it doesn't hurt then you don't need to use the foam roller. I spent a sickening amount on physio last year when a foam roller would have done much that was needed. Sure the physio loved to see me coming back every few weeks. No Physio now since last Sept as a result. The size you need is 66fit EVA Foam Roller - Blue 1 €26.50 - 15cm x 45cm got mine from physiosupplies.ie

    Is it one hamstring or both? What exactly did the physio say? If you ve been getting treatment for 5 weeks and arent improving stretching and a bit of rolling prob wont help much.

    I'd guess that you'd have a tear or something like that and are aggrevating it with the stretching and/or exercise.

    As mentioned above have you actually rested properly?

    Can you walk around pain free or when exactly do you get pain?

    Definitely not getting the full story here.
