    Hi Guys -

just wondering if anyone in the biz has any knowledge on this - I understand that the MFH has plans to introduce medical cards for holders of the LTI book to provide free GP cover - some people I know are saying that the medical card will replace the LTI book, whereas it was my understanding that we'll have both. Anyone know for sure?

    thanks,
    tbh

There were rumours 2 years ago that the LTI scheme was going but I haven't heard anything recently and I doubt it will be going any time soon. That being said, pharmacists are usually the last people to be notified about any changes (apart from patients that is.)

From the 1/11/2010 the HSE have ruled that patients can no longer qualify for both schemes. If you have both a medical card and an LTI book; then you are meant to have your LTI book withdrawn.
In typical HSE fashion this policy has been implemented in a willy nilly manner.
Each local area Health office is meant to check dual registration and if they discover patients with dual registration then they are meant to withdraw the patient's LTI book.
Some local health areas have gone ahead with this policy and some areas seem to ignore it completely.

I'm a GP and as usual we have been told next to nothing about this.
That said my understanding and based on the budget allocation I'm fairly sure the new system will retain the LTI entitlement but the medical card entitlement will be for the GP visit only card rather than the full medical card.

I'm basing this on the fact that they are budgeting for the GP fee's but have no extra allowance for medications. Also rumours and gossip floating around medical circles.

There has been a general tightening of LTI payments to pharmacies lately, I've noticed the payments board digging their heels in and refusing payments on items that would have gone through without a problem in past years.
Also, to echo what an above poster has said, patients who hold a GMS card have had their LTI books withdrawn.
With all this tightening up of the scheme, I wouldn't be one bit surprised if it's phased out, but we haven't had any official word on this yet. (No surprise there.)
