NCT Fail - Tyre Condition Bent/Deformed

As per title I had my car NCT'd recently and failed on the nearside rear tyre condition being 'bent/deformed'.

Car is 2006 Suzuki Swift. I had a family member bring it to the centre while I was abroad and have just had a look myself this morning.

Cannot see anything at all that is wrong. Even printed out the Tyre Condition section from the NCT Manual online and all seems ok.

Really I just want to know what they are actually referring to because nothing appears to be different in comparison to the other tyres. It passed on allignment and tracking so that confuses me further more. Before I bring it to some mechanic who will no doubt make up some ridiculous crap to scam some quick cash, you know yourself...

Any help/explanations are greatly appreciated lads!

It may have extreme cracks on side wall if it is not driven for a while. I didn't know that was a fail though.

Jack the car up and spin the wheel by hand...

As I said the tyre is in the exact same condition as the others. Visual of course.

Okay will try this but the general outlook is that it will probably wont be straight? I dont understand out that would be tyre condition though?

The steel wire "shell" inside in a tyre can deform, especially with age. Happens more so with some brands than others. The tyre goes oval-shaped, not round. You can usually tell by running your hand across the tread - it won't be flat any more. Also if you jack the car and spin the wheel, and watch the gap from tyre to sill/bumper bottom corner/wing bottom corner, you will notice that the gap isn't constant as you rotate, ie tyre not round.

This will not show up with tracking/alignment. The tyre might have tons of tread left, and might have perfectly good (uncracked) sidewalls - this issue is different to all of these other problems.

just get a new one, they don't cost a lot and could save your life if there is something wrong with the one you have

If a car is left stand and a tyre deforms, it can quite easily blow-out, I know, it happened to me and it is NOT nice

Ok maybe it was a bit out there but I would say its a 50/50 chance when you dont know the mechanic personally. Especially in these times?

i would say your definitely wrong.

its a common misconception that all tradesmen are con artists.
naturally every trade has its rogues but to tar them all with that brush then come here for help.

anyway, as for your tyre, if you dont know and your still not sure, seek advice from one of the above mentioned professionals.
