For anyone planning a golf holiday abroad, the cost of taking your clubs on board can be a real kick in the pants.... €100 on Ryanair!!

I've been digging around on the airline websites and have produced a table of charges and conditions for 16 airlines flying within Europe (from Ireland and the UK). It might be useful information down the road and I've included an alternative to taking your clubs altogether... namely Paul McGinley's ClubsToHire.

I can't get the table to paste on here so if you're interested, the article is on my blog: http://tinyurl.com/6oyltej

Great article Kevin. I've used Clubs to Hire out of Malaga before. Great service, got to try out a nice set of new Taylormade irons and the R11 driver, not too expensive etc.

For anyone picking up clubs in Malaga though, the Clubs to Hire office can be a little hard to find. Especially when you've just picked up a rental car and are in that 5 minute spell of getting used to driving on the other side of the road.

Just saw a nice note on their web site if you did hire something you liked...

Clubs to Hire is delighted to offer its clients the following Special Offer

Once you have hired a set of clubs with Clubs to Hire, simply hold onto your booking confirmation.

If you like the set you used at our locations, you can then redeem the full value of a single hire against purchasing any new set of clubs at McGuirks Golf in Ireland or Andrew Morris Golf in Belfast.

Am I right in thinking that Clubs To Hire were the subject of some fairly nasty tactics by RyanAir, whereby they allowed clubs to travel for free to destinations where Clubs to Hire had a presence?

I worked on a campaign two years ago for Aer Lingus who were offering free golf bag carriage for Feb/March (I think), and Ryanair did something similar the next year - they could well have targeted the ClubsToHire destinations, which at that stage would only have been 6 months old or so.

    Great article.

I've gone over to the UK a couple of times this year already, and would just give a big thumbs up to Air France/CityJet. They prize themselves as being "The Golfer's Airline" and even on check in you are made to feel as if you are wanted, rather than them resenting you for having the temerity to want to play golf abroad.

The weight is a massive factor as well. I reckon the average bag with clubs and a few other bits and bobs weights 15kg, so for the airlines where that is the limit (Aer Lingus), you get to take nothing else (apart from hand luggage). With Cityjet's 23kg, you can pack clothes as well.

Wow I never considered the weight of checked in clubs as also being restricted ala a regular suitcase. I've often stuffed in clothes, shoes and other lads few clubs even. Have always got thru. I musta been overweight at some stage.
