In charge of Newcastle Falcons next season.
Served his time, is it time to forgive and forget ?

    Of course.

Richards took it too far but I wonder how many coaches thought to themselves "there goes I but for the Grace of God"?

Time to move on. Good luck to him. Obviously Leinster fans may think differently and certainly they would have had Evans kicked a penalty.

What ever happened to the doctor who was asked to cut the subbed guy? Or the subbed guy?

I want the movie version to come out already. Think it'd be a great sporting film, human tragedy element, win at all costs coach, the only thing I'd insist on is that it NOT BE CALLED BLOODY BLOODGATE.

hate that 'gate' phrase being added to every frikking exposed conspiracy. . .

Hopefully Richards can make a great contribution to the game again, forgive, absolutely, forget, sadly never.
Not with Matt Damon in a starring roll as "subbed guy who got cut"

totally fogot he'd been working with a league team to dodge his Union ban, which I thought pretty low form at the time.

Lots of people have done worse. He's served his time and taken the flak for everyone else.

He was the driving force and architect of the incident though, so i reckon the flak was all his. Good that he's back on the right side of the rugby fence though, coup for Newcastle I think.

But where would sports journalism be without cliches? "At the end of the day... it was a perfect storm... the next score is important... he put his body on the line...". That crap drives me mad  Articulate, coherent, cliche-less journos are very rare.

Dunno about the doc - I'd imagine he's keeping a low profile somewhere as taking a knife to healthy people is probably frowned on in his profession. The subbed guy (Williams) is still with Quins and plays quite regularly, often as sub.

It would have been a right old ****storm if it actually worked and quins won.

Had Quins won Munster would have probably gone on to win the cup that year.

And then it would have been a real ****storm. :pac:

It was serious, he got nailed and has had to live with the consequences. Should those consequences include a life time ban from the game - no (clearly in my opinion).

Didn't the doctor have her license suspended? Possibly not permanently. I'd have a bit of sympathy there.

I know Tom Williams (more commonly known as the guy who got subbed) was given a more leniant sentence as it seems Richards really screwed him over. I think the club had offered to pay off his mortgage or something ridiculous if he kept his mouth shut as well and he came forward regardless.

It was a joke sentence regardless as Richards just went off and became a "consultant" somewhere else (Bristol?).

I'm happy for him to head off to Newcastle anyway. I hope Leinster get a chance at revenge at some point.

That Doctor probably lost her career over the pressure that she was put under to collude with what was going on. Was she struck off I wonder?
She's an adult I suppose and should have said no.
The question is, do we want people to be punished for the rest of their days for these things? I don't. Others may disagree.

Leinster have already got their revenge by winning the match and the cup that year. I'm not sure Leinster will be playing the Falcons any time soon anyway to get anymore revenge!

As for Tom Williams, what was his punnishment? I can't remember. I can't remember hearing much about him since bloodgate. Wasn't he once one of Englands more promising talents?

As for the doctor, I would imagine team doctors and put under a bit of pressure quite often by the coaches for one reason or another, they just have to be strong to stand up and say no, however this was a bit different.

"During the 2008–09 Heineken Cup quarter final against Leinster, Williams faked a blood injury to allow a tactical substituition to reintroduce Nick Evans leadingto the bloodgate scandal. This resulted in a 12 month ban for Williams, (reduced to four months on appeal), a three year ban for former director of rugby Dean Richards and a two year ban for physiotherapist Steph Brennan from the ERC as well as a £260,000 fine for the club." Per his Wikipedia.

The Doctor got a rap on the knuckles by the looks of things, but is still licensed to practice.

Should have been a life ban imo

Wouldnt give him too much credit, he wanted the club to pay off his mortgage and give him an improved & lengthened contract.

Doctor was sanctioned but not punished. Physio was struck off last I heard, which was a ridiculously harsh punishment. Presumably he appealed but unsure what happened.
