The latest Vertical/Battery Grip from Nikon is the MB-D12 for the D800/E.

I thought they were taking the Pi$$ with the price of the MB-D10 but they have topped that now. The MB-D12 is priced at AU$495!!! (€395) To put that in context, you can buy a D3100 Body for AU$607 (€485).

I realise that the volume of D3100's made will be huge compared to that of the MB-D12, but still you have to look at the complexity of the two items. The grip is a box a few connectors and a couple of switches. It does not even come with a battery for that price.

I cannot see how they can justify that price, to me it would still be expensive at a quarter of that amount.

The Genuine one's are not that much cheaper on the bay.

You can, of course, get the generic one's quite cheap. They are not out yet for the D800.

Watch out on Ebay for dodgy ones that are packaged and look like the real versions

Anybody try a generic one for the D7000?

Don't know why anyone would buy a genuine battery grip. I've two generic ones, and they're both excellent. Never a moment of hassle with them.

Personally I would worry about the strength of the screw on a 3rd party one, but then I use a r strap so its critical infrastructure!

    And the weather sealing.

Same strap, and generic grip. Been using it for years and never an issue. Know at least one other pro that has the same style strap and a generic grip and no issues.

(also regarding the weather sealing, the 7D's grip didn't offer weather sealing anyway, so that never bothered me, personally).

I'd also go for the Hong Kong knock off before the genuine product when it comes to battery grips.
