    Anyone here a pipe welder,I need some advice please.I have done lots of welding MMA TIG MIG.I've not done much the last year and I'm thinking of talking to FAS about doing the pipe welding coarse.

    The test is a doddle vee butt root fill and cap with 6013 electrodes.Is it true that FAS pay for the pipes that are tested? How are the pipes tested is it a visual or is it x rayed.I know I'm jumping the gun a little as I've not even talked to FAS yet.I don't even know if I quailify to get on the coarse.Just curious,its nice to know some facts though.

    Things are quite alround and why not try to better myself life is short.I've talked to a few friends who say its a very demanding coarse but worth while.X raying pipes though freaks me out maybe a visual pass will do? In all my years of welding I have only had 3 pieces of work that have gone to x ray,all have passed.

    I work in designing pressure vessel, some made from pipe, others from plate.
    The welding that these materials (carbon, stainless, inconel, duplex) are all under ASME section IX, where the welder welds up a test coupon which undergoes various mechanical tests. They then earn a PQR to that type of material grade, thickness and type of weld .

    Of the top of my head, the tests the weld undergoes are;
    • radiography
    • Tensile
    • Marco examination (photo)
    • Bend Test
    • Impact (pending on temperature)
    • Chemical composition
    • Hardness
    For pipe welding qualification, the testing requirement might be different.
    Talk to your local FAS office or another company/college who runs welding courses
