Looking for a specific DVD storage solution?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this so mods please move if you know a better place.

I have a large collection of DVD's that I don't want to get rid of but I'd like to reduce the space they take up. What I want to do is dump all the std DVD cases (except of box sets) and keep the DVD and the paper sleeve. A long long time ago I remember seeing a DVD case that took the DVD on one side and had room for the paper sleeve to be tucked in behind it in a separate compartment without being folded up I think they took about 24 DVDs and the case was about the thickness of 4 std DVD boxes.

So am I deluded or is there such a case and can anyone point me in the right direction?

Buy/build a HTPC, transfer all your dvd's to it 1:1 quality, never look back.

Makes it difficult to loan DVDS to your mates, I prefer the physical version.

This really is just a space issue, what format would you use to put DVD,s on HDD and keep the original quality and what HDD space would a 5GB DVD then require? Multiply your answer by 2000.

I've a 6TB HTPC, & 5 or 6 boxes of dvds in the attic, I know which I prefer. I store my dvds as uncompressed mpeg files which can be read in Media Center.

Anyhow, for 2000 dvd's, your gonna have some job finding a storage solution that retains good access to the films. I vaguely remember the thing your talking about in the first post, havn't seen anything like it in a long time though

It sounds like you are describing a DVD binder. Same as CD binder except the insert has space for a DVD cover/pamphlet. Im sure you can buy them on ebay, or you can buy the bare sleeves and put them in ring binders.

You can fit about 150-225 ripped DVDs on a 1TB drive depending on whether you keep the special features, foreign languages etc.

If you re-encode the video to x264 you could double or triple that with minimal change in quality.

So storing 2000 DVDs would need about 4-10TB depending on what route you go. That's not particularly far-fetched nowadays. HDD prices are a little high currently due to the floods but they should be back to previous prices within a few months and then continue downwards as normal. 2TB drives were down to about €65-70 just before the floods.

Being a fuss pot for quality, I don't re-encode. I do however remove extras etc. Agreed re hdd prices, at the moment they're crazy money. I actually need to upgrade 2 hdds in my HTPC but I'll have to wait. The capacities I need are just too dear.

    Those binders look very good

Voodu Child has the right idea, thats what I was looking for at least it confirms I'm not totally mad and such a thing exists even though I still can't find where to buy them yet. The ones I saw originally had 20+ of those sleeves in a CD case type arrangement.

No your not mad I definitely remember something similar to what your describing, as I said though it was years ago & havn't seen one since.

May not be the correct place to ask this but what software would be best for ripping the entire DVD image i.e. so that it will have a menu. Generally how long would ripping a DVD take? (would be looking at over 500 disks or so).

Given that such software evades the copy protection on the disc, the mods won't allow discussion on such.

I obviously can't name any software but I find a direct copy of the same format of a 7.5GB DVD takes between 10-20mins.

I was looking for DVD/cover sleeves a few years ago. I found quite a number of US sites selling them, but the shipping costs made them prohibitively expensive.

    Getting closer

    US site here:

But as I said before, the shipping is very expensive.
