The lens is a separate component to the DSLR body. In most cases when you purchase a (DSLR) camera a lens is included as part of the package, although you can also purchase both lens and camera as separate items.

SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses which allows you to use a particular lens for a particular situation, telephoto, fast prime, wide angle, fisheye...

Most comsumer SLRs come with a 'kit' lens which attempts to cover most of the main focal lengths. They are not usually very good, so think of them as a training lens.

If you get into photography be prepared to buy more lenses. With an SLR it's about the lenses not the camera body.

I intend to take photos mainly of livestock and landscape.

    Using Nikon D3100.

Which lens's would be best for the job?

How long is a piece of string?

It's really difficult to answer those questions. Do you want ultra-wide-angles? Do you want a fish-eye effect? Do you want close-ups of the livestock? Do you want to be able to knit together proper panoramas?
There are tons of different lenses out there, and they will all give you different effects. Learning what you want to get coming out of your camera is what will guide you as to what lenses you will want.
