My xp desktop has been going downhill for nearly two months. First i removed norton and put onavg free. My nvidia drivers would suddenly not be there on boot with xp using defaults. Upgraded my ram. Put norton back on. Then i decided to backup my whole my docs to my WD external drive. Xp staring booting with errors saying issues with registry and had to use alternate copies. I am using a boot linux cd to use this computer now. It will not boot into safe mode, i just get a blank screen. so unable to run cc cleaner. Sounds like a windows reinstall or repair? As an aside question i use a asus A8n sli deluxe motherboard with Geforce GTX800, cdrom drive , dvd drive, floppy drive and usb connections. I use a 500 w power supply, am i under powered, should i go to 650 or 700 maybe?

Just sounds like an OS problem. Would suggest format/reinstall. Know it's a pain in the bum but if the machine has been going a long time then even with things like cc cleaner, probs will eventually build up. If you have access to another machine, see if you can download something likep [snip copyright]. This will allow you to create a boot disk that has it's own mini version of XP. Will mean that you'll be able to access the hdd to back up any other info you need. And it also has plenty of diag progs to test the hdd, ram and so on.

But by the way you're describing it, it sounds like you'll need a reinstall. I do one every few months - thankfully have the service packs and stuff downloaded already so no need for massive windows update :)

Also, if you get something like [snip ] it has disk clone progs on it, so if you do have to reinstall you can create a clone of the setup so no need for the whole reinstall/update procedure in the future.

    Sounds like a reinstall.

If you can, check your HDD for errors.

Your PSU sounds just about on the limiting side, depending on the quality of it, 500 Watt on a cheap version, is not enough.

format is when you have given up

you can also reinstall to a different folder on the same drive , could even rename the old windows folder first

    clonezilla will backup drive

you could use the linux cd to go into c:\system volume information and copy a previous set of registry files, then do a system restore back as far as you can

if you want to check the hdd , parted magic cd has this as a desktop icon
