3 call outs in the last 24 hours, and with at 5 over the past week (probably more) I am really starting to recognize these lads and the work they do, I think everybody is.
Before people didnt really see them or hear much about them but now they're almost as regular as any other ES.
It makes me wonder how many people are part of the unit and where they are based.
I get the impression that its a small group of people, and with 3 call outs over the last 24 hours or so, it is a heavy work load.

What is the definition of an IED? It's a term we tend to hear from the Middle East. I used to think improvised explosive device meant it is quite crude but from what I understand the Taliban use optical counters, radio control and other sophisticated technology. We all know that they are very effective given the number of casualties over there.

So what makes an IED, why is this device being referred to as an IED and would the bombs which were made by PIRA and those which other Republicans make now be classed as IED?

That's correct terrontress, a pipe bomb that is common in current spate of gangland feeds is considered an IED hence the common mention in the media.

I.E.D. Improvised esplosive device. What you could call home made/ one off from the garage workshop kind of thing.
Crude it need not be but it is usually made up of a mix of components that were not always destined for their end use as an I.E.D.
Boobytrapp used suffice as a description but I.E.D. is the favoured term as far as I see it.
The term I.E.D. can be as loose a term as something being described as a weapon. An I.E.D can be as big or small or as effective or high tech as only limited by the experience of the "Bomb Maker".

When you say the acronym as the full words, it most definitely is descriptive of this device but it is an acronym I am more used to hearing in the context of the middle east.

Maybe the middle east is coming to Ireland

Part of me thinks it is to express the illegitimacy of a bomb or bomber. When it's your enemy, it's an IED, when it's the US or British army it'd be a bomb.

As regards the middle east coming to Dublin, Zaytoon have been knocking out their delicacies for a good while now! Explosive devices we can do without thanks.

In the case of the middle east, the enemy ie Hezbollah, Islamic Resistance, Islamic Jihad, Taliban etc etc will typically use exploded ordnance (artillery shells for example) against their enemy, they'll jury rig it up and use it as a landmine with various ways to detonate the device... So its improvised.

Names and acronym change, it used to be UXB for Unexploded Bomb.. IED for Improvised Explosive Device and in the case of our EOD teams it 'Explosive Ordnance Disposal'.

Our teams are very experienced, and very busy both at home and abroad.
