Variations in Topaz prices

Never noticed this before but the variations in Topaz petrol stations can vary quite a bit. Passing station near Blackpool in Cork on Mallow road and petrol was 163 odd. Then I got to Mallow and the Topaz station was just over 160.

On of the reasons I mentioned it is my delay in filling up meant I didn't creep over the 90euro fill barrier for the first time. Not doubt its not too far away though.

It's just a franchise, they can charge what they like/can get away with

It's the same as the price of a pint, it varies from place to place.

Topaz in Bray. Both are 164.9.

    I am boycotting them.

Tend to avoid filling up at Topaz, considerably more expensive then everywhere else and tbh I don't buy any of that environmentally conscious clean fuel bollocks.

not condoning the price but at least with topaz you are getting good quality fuel, unlike some of the cheaper stations.

I very much beg to differ but that's just my opinion ;)

Anyway, the local topaz can charge up to 4 cents more extra in the mornings than other stations, then gradually lower throughout the day...

My best friend works in Topaz here and the reason for varying prices is due to whatever competition is nearby.

He works in a Topaz at one end of the town. It's the only petrol station on that side and the price is around 161 tonight. There's another Topaz at the other end of town where there's quite a few petrol stations and their price is 159.

Basically, the more competition they have in a certain location, the cheaper the price.

Their pricing is scandalous. personally i have never experienced/seen or heard of problems with poor quality topaz fuel. but have with cheap fuel. as I have noticed lower mpg from some cheaper fuel. in my experience and opinion the quality of cheap fuel is unpredictable some good some bad, but no way to know which you are getting

They're the same in Midleton on the Cork road, the two garages (one of which is a Topaz) have a cosy little cartel for themselves, never a tenth between them. I'm sure it's unspoken, just a case of sending the lad up in the morning to check the competition, but it's no less obnoxious.

I take a perverse pleasure in filling up with my Axa Fuelcard in Topaz in Little Island, whose prices are positively obscene. (I assume the Motorcard people pay a fixed price to the stations, otherwise my joy will be wasted!)

I have but that's for another day and another thread ;)

Cheaper stuff is generally crap down here. In the last 8 months I've gone through 2 oxygen sensors and I drive a petrol van! Not isolated incidents either

Unless you are buying washed diesel at these cheaper stations, then there is absolutely no difference in the fuel between any filling station as all of the petrol and diesel in Ireland comes out of the same refinery in Whitegate in Cork.

The only difference are these "additives" which make jack **** of a difference as far as I'm concerned.

Topaz say their fuels take you further than other fuels.

I really don't know how true this is. Like is their fuel expensive but high quality that it burns more efficiently hence give ur engine more power per bang n in turn you use less fuel as the engine works less hard.

Or is it all just a marketing ploy??

I doubth if all the diesel and petrol for Ireland is refined in Whitegate. I'd think most of it is refined abroad I think there is very little difference in petrol as it is taken off at the end of the refineing stage and the demand is reducing. However the demand for diesel is increaseing after Gormless and others like him changed the car duties accross Europe and also due to diesel fuel efficency. So all refineries now try to get as much diesel out of the oil refinery process so I'd imagine that there is a secondary grade of diesel about but they are not telling us about it.

Also with diesel you have the problem with dirty tanks in petrol stations and the addition of bio fuels and the removal of sulphar which was a perseveative for diesel which all effect fuel efficency but at the end of the day you do not know who is dodgy and a huge improvement in fuel economy may not be an advantage as you could be getting the laundered stuff

Since Neville's shop closed at the top of the town, Midleton has gone from one of the cheapest towns around, to one of the most expensive. I never, ever buy in Midleton, always go to Kinsalebeg, Fermoy, Blackpool or the south city link road.
The garages in Midleton are being investigated by the competition authority I'm told.......and not before time.

The 2 Topaz stations on the Commons Road are always priced at the higher end compared to all other stations. When leaving the city they're the last station you'll pass so they probably try to capitalise on this. Just head up the Ring road to O'Callaghans by Ballyvolane - always at least 3c/l cheaper on both diesel & unleaded ;)

Isn't this kind of Normal ?

I.E. The Garage will set a lower price to try and attract new customers to sell them in store stuff ?

I dont understand why garages like you said just about break even on the petrol prices, get good stands in the shop so they can sell more. How much money are they making on a bar of chocolate and crisps were the mark up is much bigger. I see a lot of garages are giving a reduced price on a car wash now when you buy so much petrol, again gets in a few extra people too lazy to wash their own car.

there is a difference of 8 cent between the two topaz stations in Athy, they are at either sides of the town, the dearer one is closest to Dublin, the cheaper one is beside a tougher which is always cheap.
