Hi, my mom is coming for a visit (her first time out of the states!) and she will be staying with me in Dublin city... I want to take her for 1 or 2 nights to a scenic coastal area while she is here. The hitch is that she does not like to be in the car for longer than 90 minutes so it has to be relatively close by... Someone had mentioned Howth - would this be a good choice? Any other ideas? If you have a recommendation for a nice hotel or castle to stay in that would also be appreciated! Thanks!

Seafield hotel near gorey co wexford is about 90 mins from Dublin city and beside a lovely beach. You could also try fitzpatricks hotel near dalkey in south co Dublin, nice scenic walks around there. If you want to stay right in a coastal town malahide or howth might suit you better, good luck :-)

two towns that spring to mind and both accessible by train....

    1. Malahide - you could stay in the Grand Hotel in Malahide & a lovely restaurant to try would be the Greedy Goose.

    2. Donabate - Waterside Hotel.

Yes Howth is lovely, especially the Sunday Market.

Another option would be the Wicklow Way Walk great scenery! And you could drop into Johnny Fox's for lunch.

Glendalough, Laragh & Roundwood are all very close to Dublin. There is a hotel in Glendalough too but dont know anyhitng about it. Nice walks around the lakes etc.

greystones all the way :) ... lovely beach and more coffee shops and restaurants than you can shake your hat at..... plus only 30/40 mins by car from the city center!
You could do the cliff walk from there to bray and back.... it's lovely

The Royal Marine hotel in Dun Laoghaire is very nice and on the Dart. Easy to walk along the front and visit Sandycove, Dalkey and Killiney.

Howth is lovely, but I think there is more to see in South Dublin. It is also easy to drive to Glendalough from there for a day. The Wicklow Heather is a great place for a roast dinner after a stroll around the lake.

Could you make the Cooley Peninsula in 90 minutes?
It might take about ten minutes outside your target but it has some stuning scenery and nice hotels.

Could you make the Cooley Peninsula in 90 minutes?

Carlingford is doable in 90 mins from pretty much any part of Dublin, less if you start near the M50 or on the Northside. In 90 minutes you could also reach Warrenpoint. Plenty of possibilities to break the journey e.g. Monastraboice.

Thanks all! Going to look into some of these places now... I just googled Cooley Ireland and it said it was a 3 hour and 25 min drive so maybe I have the wrong location (it was north west of here on the map)...

Wrong place, Cooley peninsula is in north Louth on the East coast.
