I have an 08 van, when you drive it handy, motorway etc you will get high 40s low 50s mpg, drive it hard you will get low 40s.
Haven't had any problems with it and I have it two years now.

They're a really poor car, comprehensively outclassed by anything else available. Really nasty interior (even by Jap car standards this feels cheap and nasty), not that fast, not very comfortable, noisy at speed, and just look at it! It's a personal thing but I don't like the layout of the interior either with the handbrake etc.

Don't play the reliability card either, they're no more reliable than a Focus or a (non 1.4 or 2.0 TDI) Golf or Astra etc and less reliable than a Civic or a Mazda 3.

It's one of the worst cars Toyota ever made, and that's saying something given the legions of dull and uninspiring cars they've made over the years.

The 2002-2007 Corolla is far superior if you absolutely must have a Toyota, more comfortable, faster (because it is lighter and lower down) and a far superior interior as well. To my mind it looks better as well.

i am actually between a 06 corolla and a 07 auris i do prefer the interior on the corolla however

If it's between those two then it has to be the Corolla every time (assuming it's the old model, which it should be if it's a 2006 car).

Nevertheless you are ignoring the fact that there are better cars out there than either the Auris or the previous generation Corolla.

I have an 07 with red D. Get about 50-55MPG. but the take off is pretty poor. I like the interior but it has worn fast around the switches on the dash and the chrome rubbed off the gear stick. It has 170000 kms on the clock.

Red D is still 90hp on an auris 1.4, ie its just a badge

problem is 1 budget keeps me out of the 08 bracket cars with cheap tax and 2 i dont want a 1.9 as i just sold my leon to avoid the high tax, so max in a pre 08 car is 1.4

    What exactly is your budget?

Good call by Bazz. They're a very underrated car, and they have a seven year/150,000 km warranty, so happy days!

I must say I think it is absolutely daft OP that you want to spend €8k on a car to save less than €300 a year on tax though! I know times are tough for a lot of people but I just think it's madness what you're doing. A modern diesel isn't guaranteed to have the reliability of the old 1.9 VW TDI unit either - there's a lot more to go wrong in the newer diesels, and when the newer ones do go wrong it's usually quite expensive to fix (mostly emissions related stuff). If you're not careful with how you drive it then it could happen to you - if you're not doing a lot of miles and/or driving around town a lot then a petrol would be a better option, especially considering how cheap they are these days.

i understand were you coming from, the car i sold was non turbo and was starting to cost me quite a bit although just wear and tear i felt i was week after week throwing money into it, i am trying to minimize cost as far as possible and my budget is a bit limited, i could get a very nice golf up north vrt it etc but it kills me pay €626 in road tax, even more sickening is that i work in the north but just cant afford to move yet which would open up a whole new catergory of cars

But you have access to 8 grand?

Buy something much older with a fresh NCT if you're trying to cut costs. A non oil burning late 90s/early 00s Corolla with a fresh NCT has gone to be one of the cheapest cars to run - nothing goes wrong with them! Buy a 1.3 petrol Corolla and the only thing you'll have to do is fill it with fuel and tax it!

    Cheap as chips Astra diesel!

Have a 01, and tis mighty. On short daily runs, not driving like Miss Daisy, I always get mid to high 40's mpg. Throw a long run into it, and I'm up over 50mpg.

I'd take a C'eed over the Auris if only for the superior CRDi engine. However, I would take a Golf TDI over the C'eed, best combination of reliability, quality of drive and retaining value. For ~€8k, a basic-speced model should be attainable.

Why don't you go for a half decent car if you're going to spend €8K..there are loads out there nicer than a Corolla/Auris for similar money eg.

It will cost a few quid more to tax but at least it will be nice to drive and won't cost anymore in fuel. One thing for sure it will be way nicer than the Toyota in every respect.

Well the 2.0 TDI engine is pants for reliability, but yeah your general point still stands. If you're going to spend €8k you might as well get something half decent, not start worrying about spending €8k to save €300 a year on tax, you won't get back you're €8k in tax savings for 29 years!

If you want to save money, buy an old Corolla (pre 2000, the one without the VVTi engine as the VVTi can sometimes burn oil) or petrol engined Mazda or Honda - nothing will ever go wrong with those cars once they're serviced properly (and even if you let them go over the service interval a little bit, they'd still work)!
