currently have onboard Geforce 9100....would a Geforce 7800 GTX pci-e card be much of an improvement on this??

A 7800 is a fairly old card at this stage, unless you're getting it for free consider something a bit newer. Just make sure you have a spare PCIe 16x slot and enough juice from your power supply to run the card.
