What type of Cake for friend's birthday.

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend the best/ most suitable type of cake to ice? I was thinking of making a plain enough cake with just jam and vanilla buttercream filling and covering with roll out icing and decorating. Wod Madeira be best??? Or what would you recommend? I think sponge would be too light…

I would recommend Madeira,, especially if you want to make the cake a day or two before eating it.

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/5557/chocolate-marble-cake Chocolate Marble cake. I always make it for birthday cakes. Looks pretty, and tastes well with vanilla buttercream and fondant icing. Quite simple to make too.
