If you don't have a full licence of an earlier version of Windows that qualifies the for Windows Upgrade program, then buying just the upgrade version will mean you don't have a valid licence.

No not yet. I've only had the computer a month so will probably have to do that soon :( .
How long do you get for the windows 8 trial i heard it's 30days ?
also I was also pretty sure you could use the windows home premium upgrade instead of using the full retail version since all i need is a key to unlock it ?????

What licence came with the machine.
An upgrade licence is only valid if you already own a previous version of windows and are upgrading, not if you happen to have a trial installed.

Thats the thing........ I never had a licence since i built this computer myself.
I was just told that if i download the windows home premium iso then buy the home premium upgrade and use the key from that it would work just fine ?

You won't have a valid licence, because the Upgrade licences are only valid when applied to an existing licence.

If you've built your system from scratch yourself, you may be able to get a system-builder OEM licence rather than having to pay full price for a full-retail Win7 licence.

Anyone know if the win7 on software4student is a upgrade version or a full retail version with licence ?

Its the upgrade version. I'm not sure if they sell the retail version or not.

If you're a student you should have access to the MSDN for free anyway, giving you a licence. And windows 8 is a beta build, don't expect it to work as smoothly as you want it to. If you built it yourself, you're eligible for an OEM licence, but remember, the key dies with the motherboard.

you're eligile to purchase an OEM license but I'm pretty sure that if you follow the terms and conditions this would apply to registered system builders , with the special logins for that part of microsofts web site, rather than retail customers.
