PRSI and paye tax

    Hi There,

I started a job about 8 months ago and everything has been going well. When I started the job, I asked my boss whether he needed my pps number (he didnt ask me for it, so after a while I brought it up). He told me to send an email to his accountant with my details and I did.

Anyway, I recently decided to ring the revenue to make sure that everything was in order and when I gave them my details, they had no record of my new employer, nor were any payments being made for me.

I'm not sure what to do now. I'm sure the owner should have contacted them about me. The pay I receive every week is 'after tax' according to him and I get paid by bank transfer. I don't want the revenue to think that I was trying to evade tax.

Could anyone offer any thoughts ?

Yea there's something wrong there. Going to the revenue before your boss probably wasn't the wisest decision but your boss doesn't seem the wisest.

Have a word with your boss as soon as you can, the boss could end up in big trouble if you let the revenue know who your working for. It's probably time to start looking for a new job and get some legal advice.

If you didn't give your employers name you can probably sort things out with their accountant on Monday, give who ever looks after payroll a call first thing monday. Don't mention your conversation with the revenue.

Do you get payslips? Have you a P60. If not that should ring alarm bells as you have no proof of PAYE, USC or PRSI deductions. If your employer had no PPS number for you then he should have operated emergency tax. The link below shows you what he should have done.

There is no need for you to be worried at all .

First of all you should fill in Form 12A and send it to the tax office. I know you said that they already have your details now , but give them an estimate of your earnings for 2011 , and they will follow up on that .

As you only started with this employer in June 2011 , you may not have a tax liability for 2011 anyway .

As drunkmonkey said , there is no need for you to tell/ask your employer anything .

Other than not receiveing payslips , you employer may still have things in order , but may just be late sending in his year-end returns .

Register for paye-anytime and keep an eye on your situation in 2011 .
